New concept ideas for album covers

Due to the band name “Picasso’s Enemies.” The images below for our video magazine as well as album where used as a new influence of Picassos Art on our band. The abstract images will be used to create new images through using different sections of each picture to create a build up of one. An example of this is building various layers from various pictures in order to make one large front cover. As well as this, we will create in Photoshop pictures within pictures to show art is created inside more art. Our previous album cover created and developed in Photoshop was adequate however we chose to create a more aesthetically pleasing look for our album cover in order to entice and encourage more eyes from our target audience and hopefully entice a new customer and fan base. This decision was also taken as it takes the bands name and image as well as taking audiences previous awareness of this artist and encouraging the image of there band through using the bands name to replicate this.

The bright colours here, will be used in our album cover to be eye catching to an audience and stand out amongst other CD's in store. It also takes into account the image and nature of a fun lovign band into account.

The build up and abstract of this face will be an influence for our album in which we will build up various layers from various pictures taken to create one large final layered one, that will appear and take on the characteristics of Picassos abstract art work.

Evaluation of the Rough Cut without the after effects

Once our video was up and running on Final Cut Pro the first step was to make sure we logged all our individual scenes captured in the rushes such as ‘Georgie walking back with frame 2’ or ‘long shot of band playing.’ We specifically logged each individual shot in turn so that when it came to piecing the material together it would be far simpler to find the right material for each part of the narrative to them develop into the overall layout of the video. This decision was made instead of having large rushes, an example of how this benefitted us in our project is after Georgie walks back with the frames of the boys, I knew I wanted a close up shot of Leos arm being painted therefore I went into this log and inserted it correctly into place.

As this process continued some alterations needed to be made to the storyboard such as the previous animated layout. Images such as having a panning shot of Georgie swishing the frames onto the wall had to be changed for an over the shoulder shot of her placing the frames on the wall, as during the shooting day this shot was difficult to obtain. In addition to this a hill was present in our original storyboard. A collective decision was made before entering Final Cut Pro that this image was not going to be used in our final piece as it did not fit with the overall narrative or match the themes and images of the band; therefore we made sure to get extra footage of the bands performance as well as close ups of body’s being painting in exchange.
Having said this many aspects of our storyboard remained the same in Final Cut Pro such as our ending of the main female protagonist being hung up in a frame by the band providing a twist in the narrative for our audience. This image was specifically chosen in order to represent that our band are in fact present but absent to our target audience fo 16-24 year olds. The canvas heads were also kept maintaining the theme and image of pop art on a wall.
When the story board was first created me and my group only had half of an idea of what images we wanted to create in our video. We knew the themes and ideas we wanted to create only didn’t know how to portray those in the final narrative. We now have a much stronger solid idea of the overall narrative meaning that although aspects changed, they did so for the better.

Once a simple and basic version of our storyboard was completed, e.g. knowing where each cut would occur but with no engaging concepts added, we than began to play around with creating something aesthetically pleasing to our audience members. We did this by, taking shots such as the band playing normally. I then went into my rushes and found that at times the bands are all forward, or just the guitarist or bassist or the drummer. I then began to think how I could mix these shots up to create a popping effect where the band would jump from once place to another. I had to match up each section where a different band member was forward to the specific part in the music for continuity as well as accuracy for the lead singers miming. Once this was done, I bladed the cuts to make them shorter and snapper to create a popping effect which when neatened up gave a more visually pleasing image as well as maintaining our arty popping effect for the band.

Once we were fairly pleased with how our pop video appeared, we reviewed it with our teachers. Once doing this the feedback suggested that at times the narrative was incorrect in parts such as seeing the long shot of the boys fully painted too early therefore giving away the ‘gag’ of the video. As a group we took this on board and changed the narrative to more close ups of painting the boys as well as wide shots of the band playing further towards the beginning of the video and moved the fully painted boys along later in the time line on the Final Cut. This produced a more developed narrative to our pop video as well as building up the audiences curiosity of wanting to know what the girl is painting therefore enticing them to watch on.
Additional feedback suggested that in moments our shots were out of sink with the music and didn’t come on the beat. We changed this by creating markers on our time line matching and using the snapping tool to match each marker on the beat to the shot in order to make sure each shot came in on time.

Once we were happy with everything in terms of the narrative, the beat as well as the overall portrayal of the video we saved the final rough cut into Adobe After Effects, by moving the specific shots that need to be altered such as the blue frames and canvas’s. Here we began logging our new files so that again they would be easy to find and then underneath each log that needed after effects we inserted what would go into the frames/canvas so that when the time came we would easily be able to insert the images correctly into place saving our project time of completion.

In terms of structure for our piece we tried to build the audiences curiosity such as having the band playing but then randomly have a shoulder being painted, this entices the audience to want to know what is being painted. There is then a shot of Georgie painting a canvas which has a jump cut to an arm being painted and then walking through her art gallery putting up pictures of the band members. This begins to build up the image that she is a fan painting the boys in the band to then hang up in her studio in order to idolise. The images build up more and more until the chorus where you see the boys in wide shot fully painted for the first time. The fact that the boys are physically painted portrays them as fun and of a loving quirky nature to their target audience.
There is then a twist at the end of the narrative where the boys walk to the back of the art gallery wall. We are expecting to see another picture of them however this time we see a framed image of Georgie smiling and waving at the band. This portrays to the audience that the band also idolise their fans. As well as in fact appearing in two paradoxes. One is ordinariness, as in they are like everyday boys and present to an audience member however the other paradox is that they are extraordinary and therefore not like others such as being talented and therefore absent to the audience.

Two main influences on our piece were an A2 pop video called ‘Astronauts and All”, which have a similar look and image of their band. They also portray popping in their video.

As well as this the Kodak advert in which a picture is taken and then the frame moves to show it as a picture against the actual background of the picture was an influence. This was similar to our end image of Georgie walking back with the frame against the actual boys in the background.

Additionally a past A2 pop video called “Time to pretend” also influenced my idea in the way they use Blue screens on TVs in order to represent moving images. This was similar to our idea however instead of TVs we used frames instead. Despite this, the same process would have been carried out.

Overall I feel a particular main strength within our group when creating the rough cut was that we had used final cut pro before when creating our AS thrillers and therefore we were already aware of how the programme worked and how we went about the tasks of piecing the video together. This saved us a huge amount of time as well as making the creation of the product a lot easier as we did not need the programme re-explaining to us.
As well as this, as a result of a productive shoot day we were able to obtain some useful footage for our piece making the structuring and slotting of shots a lot easier to put it as the exact shot required for our storyboard at a given point would have been taken during the shoot.
Additionally, similar to a strength of our shoot day, the group worked collectively in terms of knowing how we wanted the band to be represented therefore this made putting the final rough cut together a much faster and argument free process such as what scenes we wanted were.
Having said this, at the same time of working in a group I felt that I had the confidence to make crucial decisions alone whilst editing. I would then check with my group at a later point to make sure everything was ok. Through continuous practice I found challenges such as syncopating James’s mouth moving to the music less complicated as time went on and soon it became a very easy concept to carry out.

On the other hand despite our group having various strengths some weaknesses we fasted in the final rough cut version was the timing of the instruments to the music such as the drummer. We were aware this would be an issue from the beginning as we had cast a none instrumentalist as our drummer. This resulted in detail care such as taking it to the next millisecond in sound in order to match up the drums to the beat as accurately as possibly.
James, the lead singer also did not hold notes at times as well as his diction not being accurate enough. This led to complications such as words “is your sweater on” where the note is held at the end; this made it difficult to obtain the right shot which portrays James holding this note in order to make the video appear authentic instead of mimed.
Moreover, we also had problems with the music track itself as it froze and the music jigged at certain points making it more challenging to edit around these points as I could not here in the music what part we were up to. Re importing the track took time to carry out however it was not a major fault that we faced.
During one editing session, I also pressed the delete button instead of the backspace. As I had just saved my work and checked out I could not reopen the file therefore I had to undo everything I had previously done and then re-sync the music to the cuts as this had become misplaced in the process.

Our After Effects footage has completely finished now and therefore we our about to reinsert it back into final cut pro to finish our overall end pop video.
When we first began after effects, this was a new process for the group therefore we sat down with a teacher who explained step by step the instruction process for it such as, after finding the correct file appropriate that we wished to work with such as the ‘over the shoulder shot of Georgie hanging up frame one’ when then:

1. Go into composition
2. New composition
3. Composition Name
4. Duration- At top screen- match them up
5. then press Ok
6. The drag into the comps file.
7. Click on the after effects shot you actually want to merge things into. Then click the apple key plus ?
8. Do the same with the footage that is then going to go directly into that frame such as the band playing.
9. Then you need to unclick the link, scale it up to the correct size of the frame, this being 134. This should be done for all compositions instantly. Put the link back on and widen it.
10. Click on effect-keying-key light.
11. Take the idropper click on the blueness of the frame. This should automatically change the colour of it.
12. The click final result go into combined matte
13. Screen matte with the arrow facing down.
14. Clip black- drag to the right to make the screen as black as possible (roughly around 32)
15. The click on clip white drag it to the left creeping it to make it as white as possible usually approx 62.
16. The press screen shrink/Gr –move to the left till it hits around -1.8
17. then click screen softness- drag to the right till it hits about 2.0
18. Then press view – final result
19. Click back on the person in the frame –scale position
20. Go back up to the top screen scroll the thin line across until it says project- pick the next one and repeat process.

We also experienced working with motion tracking during this time such as boys hanging up Georgie in last frame this was a time consuming process where accuracy was essential.
Once we had created all the After Effects we played around with colours such as saturation as this was a pop art video therefore we worked with high contrast levels as well as postorising the images to give it a more aesthetically pleasing and authentically unique look to our video.
