The Descent

I like the way the girls bodies have been used to create a skull character represeting the theme of death.

I like the use of the red wash, representing the blood.

Hide and seek

The door in the background looks mysterious and intrigues the viewers into watching the film, in order to find out.

Hostel

This sums up the film, in the way that the poster is gory and grotestec.

Warning the viewers, of what the film beholds.

House of Wax

This poster is one of my favourites, i love the cold blue wash, it gives a cold eary feel to the film and the wax on the character illustrates what will happpen in the film. Again intrigues the viewers.

Saw

I love this poster, the W on "saw" looks like a chain saw and the fact that the killing instruments are on a plate with a knife and falk potray the antagonists mentalness and the fact that he is disturubing.
Silent Hill

The girls missing mouth is scary and disturbing, the audience may feel an emotional connection to the girl as she looks innocent and vulnerable this could intice them to know what happens to her in the end.

Xx IDEAS Opening sequence of Evil Dead 2- ideas for thrillers xX

Evil Dead 2- 1987
Sam Raimi

American horror- comedy film. Standing as a sequel to 1981’s The evil dead.

· Narrative at the start. Beginning of sequence gives huge clues to rest of the film.
· Stop Animation.
· Animation logo- yellow, rose bud. Has no relation to the film. Random. However could be seen as juxtaposition.
· “Necronominiom” Archaic words- Feels like from an ancient time. Add weight to the story.
· Fist 2 minutes- enormous amount of information is given about the two main characters.
· Red wash- waves/ocean.
· Some kind of warning- spars you on as it says doesn’t watch it which makes you want to watch it as it says not too under the age of 17, just to prove them wrong.
· See through- change opacity. Add layers.
· Font- bold, sans serif, within a box, an official warning.
· P.O.V shot, tracking running quickly towards them - ambiguous character.
· Sound effects- witch screaming, Halloween noises, scary sounds. What am I going to have in my thriller?
· Symbols are unrecognisable text- different cultures and ancient times.
· Smoke filmed- then run backwards creates weirdness and uneasiness for the audience.
· 1300 A.D.
· Light at the end of the tunnel- could represent hope? Being shown the way.
· P.O.V of the car- tracking shot.
· Is my dialogue relevant in my thriller? Is it really needed?
· Establishing shot- moving away from civilisation, driving into the darkness. Feels strange, uncomfortable- moving from right to left, unusual.
· Shows a vast landscape, - they are insignificant compared to their environment- moving far into the high mountains.
· Pathetic fallacy- whether reflexes mood of the piece. Dark storm brooding ahead of them.
· Necklace – E.C.U- intriguing, ornate, precious (set in gold) could be significant later in the story.

Opening.
· Visual.
· Abstract images- Toe tag, either untied from real toe or just about to be tied to a real body.
· Inverted colours- make film backwards before even being seen. Warning to audience.
· Double imaged toe tag- superimposed-implies connection between to images.
· Ambiguous images, such as a skeletal spine.
· Journal- secret, code, words are upside down encoded.
· Distortion on the images- feels of distortion, uneasiness for the viewers. Opening of a thriller should do.
· Old crusty blood- not red, red reds and oranges. Hiding detail of toe tag. Implies some sort of censorship.

· Ambient outside world outside sounds- bad environment- realistic effect.
· Over the shoulder shot- tying tie- neat and sophisticated.
· Precise, methodical, prepared. Everything is in order for him.

Swordfish- opening scene.

Sword fish- not a metaphor or any phrase we recognise immediately. Therefore it’s intriguing- what is it referring to?
· Interference effect- terrorist activity/ technology based. Intentional Hacking – imperfect.
· Monochrome screen- often used in banks / number crunching and computer code.
· Serif font- seen in formal texts like newspapers.
· White on black- W.O.B
· Orchestral score – suspense /rising tension
· Anticipatory quivering strings

· Glints of metal and glass, what else glints mirrors, water, trophies, silver services, candlesticks.
· Foreground and background, focus pulls- in and out of focus could indicate he is not to be trusted, and portrays his character to be ambiguous.

Before the creation of Nibiru, my treatment to my thriller was firstly called Changleings in which the presentation describes the idea of a monster kidnapping a child from a car that has broken down. When completing the planning and treatment for this film, the main issue that arose was the fact that there was no unique seeling point, the story line was traditionally the same as everybody elses, there ws nothing that differenciated our project. This then led to the creation of Nibiru with its unique use of after effects.

XxPreliminary Filming Task xX

This was the first time, I got a real taste for Media. I was very pleased with my group as I knew everyone was ready to contribute and take part.

We were given a story board with a strict dialogue such as "come on do it, do it now I cant wait for you" etc.. they were adimant that the dialogue was not to be changed. Through this we had to create a scene that we found would fit into the scenes and specific camera angles such as close ups and over the sholder shots.
My group decided on having a comical theme of the forbidden biscuits, as we wanted to create something different. This task made me realise how many times a scene will be shot in order to get the different angles. Now when watching Tv soaps such as Eastenders I can appreciate how many shots it must take to achieve the one scene, as it would of been shot from vairous camera angles..

Evaluation of the Task.
During filming everyone worked together and listened to one another as I was the director, I had the role of shouting standing by, and action. In additon I had to say whether the cameras were at the right angle or if the actions were acted in the correct way such as the pointing of a finger.
The fact that the scene had to be shot so many times, made the task tiring after a while but I had to stay on focus as if any bit was not the same as before I needed to shout cut and restart it as otherwise it would not look accurate on screen. All my knowledge from my previous tasks were used in this such as the 180 degree rule as well as focus and apiture. This is when I apprecitated the purpose of the previous tasks.
During filming, the acting and dialogue was very fast, this was a huge disadvantage when editing as the scene became very fast with few pauses, this made it diffiuclt for onlooking viewers to understand the scene and fully appreciate it.

Overall I was happy with the end result and feel as a first piece of media work, it was well produced. As not only did I enjoy the task, I learnt alot, such as how to zoom and focus.

It was interesting to compare my groups work to others as although the same dialgue was used the interpretations of the scene contrasted. For example one group did skipping school, where as another group chose do about a pregnancy test..

My role and what I did:



I was the director and therefore had the responsibility of directing the actors e.g. postioning them, telling them were to point the camera or aim it at, at the different points.
I also decided whether or not the camera was at a good angle and looked at the focus before beginning of filiming. I was to say standing by, rolling and action.




The strenghts of the group:

Communication worked well, everyone respected each others roles, and listened to instructions and responded.

the 180 degrees rule was relatively easy, as we made sure always before filming and saying action that we did not cross the line, this was not that challenging as our acotrs remained seated for most of the shots until Austin stood up. In which the 180 rule needed to be checked, just to be sure.

We followed the story board correctly, and accurately.

There was a large amount of control of the camera, as a tripod was used to steady it.

Jorden kept looking to see if the gain was correct to keep the shots correctly lighted at 0 without the gain.

We observed the rule of 3rd well.

Our framing was good.


The weaknesses of the group:

We could of moved quicker from one set to another, in order to get the job done quicker.

Marking where the camera used to be, with the tape in order to get everyone in exactly the same postion for realistity.

Things that could make the filiming process easier next time:

We could of used, more variety of angles of shots such as low and high angles to show vairety. We did this at times but more could of been done.

xx Introduction to Editing and film cut pro xx

This was my favourite part of the priminalary task, we had done the hard part of shooting the film. Now it was time to turn it all into a short movie clip.

In order to do this we:

1. I set up a scratch disk (in which the computer makes notes about what I am doing.)
2. Final cut - systems settings - set - Fire wire drive - folder - scratch - choose.
3. Make a new folder (final cut called bins)
4. File - new - bin - enter title.
5. make a log bin.
6. File - new - bin - enter name - drag log bin into folder.
7. Log it.
8. Beginning of take- i (in) - go right to the end of the take - o (out)
modify - make sub clip - enter title- drag clip into log bin.

To make own time line:

file- new - sequence - enter title - drag into folder again
double clip ruff cut.

XxFilmimg a Story BoardxX

This was our first experience of creating a real film story board. Matt took us through setting it up itup step by step. And then we were on our own.
I was the director as well as camera girl, and found it really benefical to get a clear idea of how camera angles as well as focus works. We also used apature to contribute light as it was a very cloudy day and more light was needed. The rule of 180 degrees, was difficult to stick to as at times we broke this rule by crossing over. However when looking back we saw this to be the case as corrected ourselves.

There were varies parts to the task were the team had many strenghts such as every one contributed in some way, and we had a good communication business. We also worked quickly and efficiently to complete the task, as my group finished in the designated time period. We overall, made a good group and for a beginning story board I feel we did well.

however there were some disadvatages during the task Such as there were at times parts when, disagreements did arise about angles as well as positioning. However these were overcam. In addition as we were only beginners to the media subject and this was our first piece of real story board making on film. We did not know the 180 degree rule well, and on several occasions this was crossed. However our mistakes were shown to us and taken on baord as constructive critisisem. This has not occuredc since.

Overall I felt the team worked really well, we completed the task in timed conditions and produced a really good western film.

My photoshop practical lesson was my favouite so far, it was the first time I had used it and had no idea soo much could be changed within a picture on photoshop. You could completely transform a person. Its fantastic for facebook pictures..
However as it was a media lesson I had to keep to the theme of thriller hooror in whcih I began to make this themed base poster. At the beginning i found this task difficult and I really struggled as i didnt understand why everyone else could do it yet I could not. Howver they had had some experience before and I was new to the whole consept. Having said this once i got into it i was able to create a whole thriller poster on my own such as using crop, lasou and air brushing..


Matt and Vikki gave me some examples in class of how an ordinary thriller poster can be taken and turned into whole new poster just by changing the angles of things such as an angle of an arm. such as "Bad Boys.

Fuji finepix s900 digital camera

During my first few practical lessons in Media we had the task of experimenting with the camera, by collecting shots that represented the theme of thriller. This is good fun, however learning to use the camera was challenging. Before taking any pictures we had to check the focus lens to check the shot was focused as well as the aperture being at the correct number so that the right amount of light could be let through. An example of this in action is if you were going to take a picture of a flower in the dark, you would need lots of artificoul light (aperture) because it would be dark. But also you will need a fast shutter speed, in order to avoid blurring the image.

These are some examples that I and Rabi took of pictures that we felt could be used in a horor poster and to represent different angle shots and there meanings:

Close up shot












This makes the viewer feel close to the person in shot and intense. This picture was taken on a zoom, where the focus (wheel on the camera) had to be fiddled with. The eyes are also looking to the left this makes the viewers wonder what she is looking creating antisipation and the unknonwn.


Long shot

This type of shot gives an entire frame of the aspect in the picture, in this case Rabi allowing us to view her from head to toe.

Extreme close up

This meant that the camera was focused on an aspect in the frame, which in this case emphasises the focus on her eyes being abnormal. It also makes you focus on it and makes you think about why you have been given this piece of information and not of the whole body.

High angle

This was taken by me being on my knees at a very low level with Rabi looking over me, this demonstrated her importance and superiority over me at that moment in time. This created a thriller theme as it portrayed intimidation and fear.

Low angle

This was taken by me, standing tall on a wall looking over Rabi; the purpose behind this was portraying the shot of Rabi being scared by something lurking over her as the theme was thriller. I feel this was our best shot as we really captivated it!

When I am older I would love to go into either advertising or the film making industry. As these areas are my main passions whether it being on film or behind the camera. If I then learn to become really good, with success at hurtwood I may even teach the subject at school to encourage others to join the same route. As I feel as a teacher I would be able to inspire them as certain aspects of Media inspire me. The next step is university, where I may possibly go onto gaining a teaching degree in film making. xD

When it comes to media, I chose to do it because i really want to learn how to make films and edit them with the technology. I also wanted the majority of my A levels to be practicial as i feel personally i am better at them then the acedemic side. I feel I made the right decison and glad I decided to take media.A the present moment I feel I am comming to grips with it and have an understanding of most of the key aspects. It's also great fun! Media's not like any other subject with a yes or no answer like in maths or english. You are allowed to have opinions and express your own views. There is NO strict yes or no answer.
